We’re committed to protecting our earth’s resources by utilizing a wide range of environmentally-friendly production processes and recycling programs throughout all aspects of our business, while embracing the Circular Design model by promoting sustainable print alternatives that are safer for our planet.
Green Certifications
It’s one thing to “talk” about your sustainability initiatives, and another to demonstrate a measurable commitment to industry standards. Hatteras partners with a variety of regulatory and environmental organizations who are leading the effort to create a more sustainable global ecosystem while ensuring compliance to best practices.
SGP Certified
The Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) is the leading accrediting body in the United States and Canada that certifies printers as maintaining the highest environmental operating standards.
Through a comprehensive audit that identifies a printer’s commitment to eliminate waste, reduce energy consumption and transition to sustainable materials, SGP Certification demonstrates to our customers that we’re an active participant in ensuring a more sustainable supply chain.
FSC® & SFI® Certified
The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) are two of the world’s most trusted organizations overseeing sustainable forest management.
Hatteras maintains FSC and SFI Chain-of-Custody Certifications as part of our commitment to sustainable sourcing. Nearly 95% of the paper we source comes from FSC or SFI certified supply chains, helping clients align their print programs with recognized sustainability standards.

Investing in Renewable Energy
Hatteras purchases Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), which are independently verified and tracked units of energy produced by renewable sources (wind, solar, etc.).
Through this Green-e Certified energy program, we offset 100% of our manufacturing facility’s Scope 2 carbon emissions (equivalent to 2,800 metric tons) with equal contributions of renewable energy to the U.S. power grid.
To put this in perspective, this positive offset equates to the amount of energy needed to fuel 330 average single-family U.S. households.

Eco-Friendly Operation
Hatteras strives to integrate green printing practices throughout all aspects of our operation. From investments in eco-friendly print technology, to robust recycling and waste-reduction programs, we’re continuously looking for opportunities to minimize our carbon footprint and align with our clients’ sustainability goals.
Sustainable Print Technology
- We print with soy-based inks, which go further than petroleum-based inks and are easier to recycle.
- Our Heidelberg XL 106 Offset Press and our fleet of Vutek and Durst Large Format Presses use the latest in LED-curable ink technology, offering reduced overall energy consumption, less ink usage, and less waste than traditional UV curing technology.
- Our HP Digital Web Press and three HP Indigo Digital Presses are highly agile, energy-efficient machines that require little to no make-ready time, and significantly reduce waste using on-demand printing.
Low-Waste Packing Solutions
Hatteras’ Packsize on-demand packaging equipment creates highly durable, custom-fit cartons (made from 60% recycled content) eliminating the need for “void fill” while saving our clients money on shipping costs.
A Symbol of our Commitment
We understand the importance of a logo and the powerful meaning it often represents. As sustainability has become a significant focus across our company, we decided to create a Hatteras Sustainable Print Solutions logo to reinforce the importance of our environmental initiatives among our staff and with our clients.
You’ll see us using this logo throughout our facility and on materials that meet a specific set of criteria – and we encourage our clients to do the same! Using this logo on printed materials means they are:
- 100% Recyclable
- Sourced from Certified Forests
- 100% Biodegradable
- Produced using Renewable Energy
- Printed by an SGP Certified Partner
Hatteras’ Sustainability Policy

As a manufacturer, we understand the important role we play within the global supply chain. For this reason, we choose to exercise green printing practices while guiding our clients towards sustainable print solutions that use materials from renewable resources and are designed for minimal environmental impact. We take great pride in being certified as both an FSC and SFI Chain-of-Custody supplier, as well as a Sustainable Green Printing Partner (SGP) that adheres to sustainability best practices throughout our printing facility.
Our Sustainability Committee meets once per month to identify and prioritize our environmental initiatives using a foundation that:
- Establishes objectives and targets
- Includes the participation of staff
- Complies with legal and regulatory requirements including EPA, NJDEP and OHSA
- Prevents pollution and waste, while utilizing reuse and recycling
- Provides a healthy and safe work environment for our employees
With a culture of continuous improvement, we’re committed to identifying new ways to protect the environment through the equipment and materials we use, the suppliers we choose to do business with, and our day-to-day operational and recycling practices.
